Intro Classes in Oakland

Sewing classes for kids in Oakland

A small group of up to four kids, four weeks, and a project each of them dreamed up themselves. We start with a needle and thread and work our way up to the machine. Serving families from every Oakland neighborhood, Berkeley, Piedmont, San Leandro, Castro Valley, and the surrounding East Bay.

Who it's for

Kids ages 7 to 12 who want to make things. No experience needed and nothing to bring.

Groups are capped at four kids so everyone gets the hands-on help they need when the thread tangles or the machine misbehaves. It's a calm, chatty, creative time!

What to expect in class

We start with hand sewing so kids understand how a stitch actually works, then move to the machine as their confidence grows.

  • Threading a needle, tying a knot, and the handful of stitches that do most of the work
  • Cutting fabric safely and pinning pieces so they line up
  • Learning the sewing machine step by step — foot pedal, straight seams, backstitching
  • Designing their own project: pillows, stuffed animals, hair clip holders, and whatever else they cook up
  • Finishing and stuffing, so they leave with something real in their hands

Questions I get asked

Does my kid need to bring a sewing machine?

No. Machines, tools, and materials are all here. Kids just bring themselves.

What if they've never sewn before?

That's great! We start at the very beginning with hand sewing and build from there.

What will they make?

They decide. Past students have made pillows, stuffed animals, hair clip holders, and plenty of things I'd never have thought of.

Do I need to sign up for all four weeks?

Yes — the $150 covers a four-week session, and projects build week to week.

What if my child misses a class?

Life happens! If your child is sick or your family is traveling, one missed class can be applied to a future session so they keep building their skills. I'm not able to offer refunds or prorate the session, but we'll make sure no class goes to waste.

Can I stay and watch?

Most kids this age settle in best on their own, but reach out and we can talk about what works for your family.
